NASA Fixes Mars Lander by telling it to HIT itself with a Shovel

NASA’s InSight lander, which is currently on the soil of Mars, has faced few unforeseen problems during its stay to explore and study the red planet.

As the name suggests, a digging probe that was built to drill or burrow underneath the skin like a jackhammer got stuck because Mars’ surface is clumpier than NASA’s scientists anticipated, Popular Science reports.

After some failed efforts to get it out, scientists had to get a bit creative. Eventually, it freed the probe up by giving it a strong thwack with Lander’s shovel.

NASA expected its probe, nicknamed “the mole,” to dig its way through sand-like land. But because the Martian surface clumped together, the whole gear got stuck in place.
