A bright flash of light splashed across the sky over New Zealand recently just after 10 p.m. local time. It’s assumed to be a meteor. According to the New ZealandHerald, a “giant blinding flash” and a strong explosion of blue and white light was spotted over much of the country, from Whangarei in the north to upper South Island. News of numerous sonic booms, certainly from the Waikato and South Auckland regions, seem to be trending, according to WeatherWatch.co.nz, which is gathering eyewitness reports. Several people heard a low thunder after seeing the lights, others sensed as if their house was quaking. In a tweet, Auckland Civil Defence & Emergency Management approves that it was certainly not lightning.
