Citizen-funded LightSail spacecraft will fly in May

A small-scale spacecraft known as LightSail, planned to be drove completely by sunlight reflecting off of its super-thin sails, is planned to be launched in May this year. Possibly the utmost impressive thing about LightSail spacecraft is that it was supported financially almost completely by citizen donations to The Planetary Society, a non-profit space encouragement organization co-founded by the late astronomer Carl Sagan and presently directed by Bill Nye, the Science Guy. The LightSail won’t be up for any Matthew McConaughey-style interstellar tasks just yet. Actually, this first journey won’t even take it past Earth’s orbit, or the boundaries posed by atmospheric drag. Nonetheless, LightSail spacecraft is still quite remarkable.
